Album-equivalent accounting converts streams across every track on a release into units. A record where listeners play the whole tracklist repeatedly generates far more units than one where two singles carry everything, even if the second sells more copies outright. Depth beats concentration under this system, by design.
Hip-hop arrived at that structure independently. Long tracklists, features that pull in multiple audiences, and a listening culture built around playing a project end to end rather than cherry-picking singles all predate streaming accounting. When the rules changed, the genre did not have to adapt to them.
Feature economics compound the effect. A guest verse places an artist inside somebody else’s streaming numbers, so a busy year of features accumulates chart presence without a single release of one’s own. In genres where collaboration is rarer, that entire accumulation channel is unavailable.
There is a counter-pressure the raw numbers hide. Optimising for depth encourages longer tracklists than the material justifies, and compilers have already responded by capping how many tracks from one release can count toward a chart position. Each cap trims the advantage slightly without removing it.
The durable point is that chart dominance measures fit between a genre’s habits and a chart’s rules. Hip-hop’s fit is unusually good. Change the accounting and the ranking changes, which is worth remembering before reading any chart as a straightforward statement about what people love most.
