BTS, MetLife and the Grammy Category Nobody Asked For

The group will not submit ARIRANG for 2027 consideration. The new Asian Pop category is the reason.

The decision responds to the Recording Academy’s new Asian Pop category. A dedicated category is usually presented as recognition, and it is often received as containment, because it creates a place where work from a region can be honoured without competing in the general field. Declining to submit is the sharpest available response, since it refuses the category without arguing about it.

The general-field question has followed the group for years. Repeated nominations without a win, in a period when their commercial performance exceeded most of the acts they were nominated alongside, produced a durable suspicion about how the Academy handles non-English-language pop. A separate category does not resolve that suspicion; it formalises it.

On stage the point was made more directly. During MIC Drop, RM improvised a new line: Born in Korea… that’s why they don’t know about us. Delivered in a stadium in New Jersey, to an audience that plainly did know, the line worked as commentary on the awards body rather than on the audience.

The Academy’s position is not baseless. Categories exist precisely to prevent dominant commercial genres from crowding out everything else, and several were created for exactly that reason. The difficulty is that this particular category is defined by region rather than by musical form, which makes it structurally different from a genre category and harder to defend on the same logic.

The practical effect is that the biggest act eligible for the new category has declined to enter it in its first year. Nas was in the audience at MetLife, which is the kind of detail that reads as incidental until you notice how much of this argument is about who is treated as a peer of whom.
