A Pianist Turned Producer Sets a Singable Melody Over a Big Room Drop

Twilight, the new single from JOYFIRE with Christine Elise on vocals, was in the DJ pools on 30 September. It reached streaming services two days later, on 2 October. The New Jersey producer made it for the mainstage, and the DJs heard it first.

JOYFIRE’s music is in the playlist below, and his full run of coverage is collected on JOYFIRE’s artist profile. Twilight reached this desk through PopHits.Co Music Charts, which verifies independent artists and places their releases across its network of music news desks. Press play, then keep reading.

Who JOYFIRE Built Twilight For, From Mainstage Crowds to Listeners Who Want a Melody to Sing

The first audience is plain. Twilight is a Big Room record for the mainstage, aimed at listeners of electro house, Big Room and melodic EDM. JOYFIRE also wants it heard well beyond the United States, by listeners across the Americas, Europe and Asia.

The second audience is less obvious: listeners who come to a dance record for the tune. JOYFIRE is the name Paul Armento releases under, and he was a pianist before he fell for EDM. By his own account, his early tracks leaned too far into musicianship. So he now builds around big drops with Big Room techno elements, and the work is in the balance. A heavy low end of bass and kick sits under melodies a crowd can actually sing, shifting between major and minor keys.

Listeners who know the Big Room peak years will recognise the shape. The Dutch duo W&W released Bigfoot in 2014, and it became one of the mainstage anthems of that summer. Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike were voted number one in DJ Mag’s Top 100 DJs poll in 2015, at the height of the Big Room mainstage era, and the Belgian brothers remain one of the best-known main-stage acts at Tomorrowland. The piano link, however, points somewhere else. Kygo started piano lessons at six, long before he made his first tracks, and his melodies still carry that training. Twilight takes from both camps, with a Big Room frame around a pianist’s tune.

DJ Pools Had JOYFIRE’s Twilight Before Its October Release, in Four Versions Built for Mixing

DJ pools are subscription services that send new tracks to working DJs, often in edits made for mixing. In other words, they are where a dance record meets its first professional listeners. Twilight went through them early.

First, the original mix appeared in the Digital DJ Pool pack dated 30 September. It is listed in the key of 8A at 128 BPM, with a running time of 3:48. In the Camelot notation DJs use for harmonic mixing, 8A is A minor, so the record blends cleanly with other tracks in that key. Then, on 2 October, the day of the streaming release, Digital Music Pool carried two more versions: an instrumental and an intro clean edit, both at 128 BPM. An intro edit gives a DJ a longer opening to mix in from the previous record, and a clean edit is the radio-safe version. On 14 October the 8th Wonder pool added the original mix. The same day, the Transition pool published its own edit, which takes a set from 140 BPM down to the track’s 128.

That last edit is a useful signal. A transition version exists so a DJ can move from a faster set into the record without a hard stop. Pools build those edits for records they expect DJs to reach for, and by 14 October Twilight was out in four versions across four pools.

The People Around Twilight, From Christine Elise’s Vocal to the DJs Who Play JOYFIRE

The credits are short. Paul Armento wrote the music and the lyrics and produced the track himself, credited as Paul Armento aka JOYFIRE. Christine Elise is the featured artist and sings on it. The release came out through Quantum Flow Records.

Around that core sits a wider circle. There are the DJs who took it from the pools. There are also the playlist curators the single is pitched to, in the Mainstage EDM, electro house and Big Room lanes. Finally, there are the listeners who already follow JOYFIRE across his channels.

From the BestMusic.News curator team: “We track records by where they land first. Twilight landed in DJ pools before it landed in playlists, and on this desk that is a better early signal than any first-week stream count.”
