Four Years on, the Stranger in Paradise Track Still Reaches Classic Rock Fans

Number one of ten. That is where Illustrate Magazine placed Bad Ass Cafe when it picked its Friday listening on 14 October 2022. The track belongs to Midnight Kahuna, the Miami rock band built around songwriter Rick Canut, and four years later it still works as a way into a catalogue that mixes classic rock, art rock and AOR.

Midnight Kahuna’s Bad Ass Cafe is in the playlist below with this desk’s rock and indie picks, and the band’s coverage to date is on the Midnight Kahuna profile. The track reached BestMusic.News through PopHits.Co Music Charts, which verifies independent artists and places their releases across its network of music news desks. Give it a spin, then read on for the fans who keep it going.

Who Bad Ass Cafe Is For, From Classic Rock and AOR Listeners to Fans of Island Rhythms

The first audience is the classic rock listener. Bad Ass Cafe runs for four minutes and forty seconds. It sits third on Stranger in Paradise, the eight-track album Midnight Kahuna released in 2022. The arrangement is full-band rock with room to wander. Ragtime, barbershop, country and Dixieland touches all pass through it. In other words, that mix is the point. It suits listeners who like their rock with a sense of theatre.

The second audience is the AOR fan. Adult-oriented rock rewards songwriting and musicianship over volume, and that is where the band places itself. Rick Canut writes the songs, sings lead, plays rhythm guitar and keys. Meanwhile, Chris Castellanos plays bass. Johnny Hutt adds saxophone, flute and Hammond organ. Carlos Fernandez plays lead guitar. A lineup that size gives a four-minute single plenty of colour.

The third audience is harder to name but easy to spot. It is the listener who wants rock with a tropical accent. When the band relaunched in 2007, the stated plan was to trade the sounds of Sting, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, Jimmy Buffett and Bob Marley for exotica. Fans of Jimmy Buffett will recognise the idea of a rock song that feels like a holiday, an idea Margaritaville made famous in 1977. Fans of Billy Joel will hear the piano-led storytelling of a songwriter who sits at the keys. Bad Ass Cafe works on a smaller scale than either, but it draws on both habits.

Early Response as Illustrate Magazine Put Bad Ass Cafe at Number One in October 2022

The early response came in October 2022. Illustrate Magazine‘s Friyay Beats column ranked Bad Ass Cafe first in its top ten for the weekend. The write-up heard rock, island, reggae, country, jazz and world music in the band’s sound. It also borrowed a line worth repeating: unlike The Beatles, who asked if you wanted a revolution, Midnight Kahuna only wants to know whether you want a vacation.

A number one in a weekly recommendation list is a small ranking. Still, it is a clean signal. It shows a single that reached an editor’s ears months after release and earned the top position on its own terms.

The Kahunuts and the South Florida Stages That Keep Midnight Kahuna’s Songs in Circulation

The community around the band has a name. Fans call themselves the Kahunuts. They go to the shows, they sing along to the originals, and they appear in the band’s music videos. That loyalty is the reason Midnight Kahuna stopped playing covers. The audience wanted the band’s own songs, and the band followed it.

Beyond the records, the live map is wide. Since 2007, Midnight Kahuna has played venues and festivals across South Florida, from Islamorada in the Florida Keys to Salt Springs, between Gainesville and Daytona Beach. The band has played Hard Rock Cafe stages along the way. Its songs also travel on internet radio, and its videos live on YouTube.

A Band That Kept Its Rights and Its Following Since the Tobacco Road Days

However, the roots go back further. Rick Canut and Chris Castellanos started playing together in 1999 as the Canute band. They released Alive From East Drive and became regulars at Tobacco Road, the Miami bar where their first following formed. In 2007 they returned under a new name. A kahuna is a Hawaiian wizard, and the plan was an exotic lounge act in the spirit of Martin Denny and Les Baxter. The old fans showed up wanting rock, so the lounge idea went and the name stayed.

That history explains the catalogue’s independence. In a 2020 interview with Buzz Magazine Miami, the band described turning down record deals that would have taken the rights to its songs. Every Midnight Kahuna release since has stayed in the band’s hands, including Bad Ass Cafe.

BestMusic.News’s curator team: “Bad Ass Cafe ranks well because it never picks one lane. A ragtime piano figure, a country turn and a full rock band all share four minutes, and the Kahunuts are the proof that a mixed recipe can keep an audience for years.”

Start with the band’s YouTube channel, where the videos live. Then hear the full Stranger in Paradise album on Spotify and the 2024 album Radio Rebel on Apple Music. Midnight Kahuna is also on Spotify, Bandcamp, Instagram and ReverbNation.
