Chris Kerley Sings and Eligio Buia Plays Everything on a 2022 Melodic Metal Debut

The Doom Approach runs to ten tracks, and two musicians made all of it. Atomic Whimper, the duo of British singer Chris Kerley and Italian guitarist Eligio Buia, released the heavy metal album on 30 July 2022. It was their first record together.

Atomic Whimper’s Quicksand sits in the playlist below, the album’s opener and the quickest way in, and the duo’s coverage so far is collected on the Atomic Whimper artist profile. The Doom Approach came to this desk through PopHits.Co Music Charts, which verifies independent artists and places their releases across its network of music news titles. Hit play, then read on for the rest of the record.

Who The Doom Approach Is For

This is an album for listeners who like their metal melodic. The band tags it as melodic metal and heavy rock, and its label adds alt metal and electronic rock. In practice, that means big riffs under a singer who aims for tunes, not just volume. As a result, fans of hard rock who stopped at the classic era will find plenty that feels familiar.

The split of the work is unusual, so it is worth stating plainly. Buia plays every instrument on the record, and he also produced and mixed it. Meanwhile, Kerley sings, processed and edited the vocals, and mastered the album. Together, the two wrote the music and lyrics and arranged the songs as a pair. Andrea Moretti made the artwork.

The tracklist opens with Quicksand and closes with Out of my Mind. In between come Dream Keeper, Dementia Place, Unmask the Deceiver, Little Venice, Unnamed, Sticks & Stones, Far is Enough and Dark Well of Madness. The lyrics, published on the band’s Bandcamp page, follow those titles closely. Quicksand opens with a mastermind who controls the media, and its chorus warns that everyone is walking on quicksand. Little Venice, by contrast, offers a refuge, a dream place to belong in turbulent times. Finally, Out of my Mind closes on mania and a feeling that will not lift.

Two reference points help here as well. Alter Bridge built a career on a melodic singer working over heavy, riff-led guitar, and Atomic Whimper follow a similar plan, with Kerley’s lines riding on Buia’s riffs. Further back, Black Sabbath set the template for slow, heavy, riff-first songwriting, and the word doom in this album’s title points straight at that lineage.

The Early Response to The Doom Approach Came From Reviewers and a London Label

The first reviews were warm. In August 2022, The RingMaster Review heard more flavours in the album than the heavy metal tag suggests. It singled out Dementia Place, which it said blends gothic and progressive shades with classic and groove metal. It also noted that Little Venice works as a ballad and that Sticks & Stones turns acoustic.

The album also found a home with UnderdogElite, a London label whose Bandcamp page carries The Doom Approach alongside Zedi Forder, Tricore and King Born Peasant. Those are Kerley’s other bands: the Woking-based singer is also a drummer and songwriter who has fronted several UK projects since the mid-1990s, rock and metal among them. The label shared the album’s promo video and offers a Bandcamp player for blogs that want to stream the record in full.

On Spotify, the order of the band’s most-played songs offers another reading. Dementia Place currently sits first among Atomic Whimper’s top tracks, ahead of Quicksand and Dark Well of Madness. In other words, listeners find their way in through the heavier middle of the album, rather than only through the opener.

The Doom Approach Found Its Community Through an Italy and UK Partnership and a Shared Label

Atomic Whimper describe themselves on Bandcamp as an Italy/UK band, and their Instagram calls The Doom Approach their first album. In turn, that cross-border setup shapes the community around it. Buia brings an Italian guitarist’s riffs, while Kerley brings a long run of UK projects, and UnderdogElite ties the new duo to those older bands and their listeners.

For a duo with no major-label backing, that network therefore matters. Each recommendation on a label page or a shared track sends a few more listeners to the album, and those listeners are exactly the people this record is for.

From the BestMusic.News curator team: “Start with Dementia Place, the song most listeners already pick first. It shows the album’s plan in one track: Buia’s riffs set the weight, and Kerley’s vocal keeps the melody in charge.”

Where to Hear Atomic Whimper

This melodic metal album suits listeners who want heavy music with clear vocal lines. It also suits anyone who follows independent metal through labels and blogs rather than big festival bills.

Follow Atomic Whimper across platforms: Spotify, Bandcamp, Amazon Music, YouTube, Instagram, and Linktree.
